Did you know the benefits of massage are more significant than just the physical sensations during the session? The relaxation response you feel during a massage is due to the decrease in stress hormones that allows your heart rate and breathing to slow and your muscles to relax.
Our body’s response to massage is to increase the level of serotonin, a critical neurotransmitter in our brains that is tied to rest. With an increase in the available level of serotonin, our thoughts and emotions may improve, and with regular massage, there may be a decrease in the physical effects of stress on our bodies, including an improvement in circulation.
How often you get a massage depends on your stress and activity level. For stress relief, you should get one every four to six weeks and if you are highly active you should get one every one to three weeks.
